The digital namespace continues to expand, offering more creative and memorable opportunities for domain names. In 2024, several new TLDs (Top-Level Domains) have reached General Availability (GA), enabling the public to register these new extensions. Let’s take a look at the TLDs that are now available for registration this year.
The launch of a TLD
The launch of aTLD goes through different phases and the structure and timeline can differ from registry to registry. It usually starts with a Sunrise Period, making registrations available only to trademark owners who have performed the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) procedure.
After that, optionally, registries can offer a Landrush Period, offering premium access to high-value domains. The launch of a TLD will eventually reach General Availability (GA). It is the final stage, when registrations are made available to the public at the regular annual fee on a first-come, first-served basis.
Some registries will set special requirements for registrations. Others are simply available to everyone without any restrictions or requirements.
What is General Availability (GA)?
General Availability (GA) is the final phase in the launch of a TLD. After the initial phases, including the Sunrise Period for trademark owners and possibly a Landrush Period for premium access, the gTLD enters GA, allowing the general public to register domain names on a first-come, first-served basis. Some TLDs may have special registration requirements, while others are open to everyone.
